T-minus 5 Days

I didn't do much in the way of prep today, other than bringing my laptop and a reference book home so they can be packed. I guess this is a good time to tell you what I'll be doing in Peru.

The first two weeks is a class, "Tropical Woods and the Fungi Who Love Them." The actual class is a six-credit course that takes place at Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina and Porto Maldonado. The first part of the course, at UNALM, is identification of tropical woods. The second part of the course takes place at Porto Maldonado, a field station in the Amazon, and involves collecting and culturing fungi. I am taking part in the first half only, for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, because of the restrictions from my fellowship, I can take only three credits during the summer without paying more. Second, I don't do well in heat and humidity, I react badly to insect bites, and I am terrified of snakes. The Amazon really holds no allure for me. I will stay in Lima will the rest of the group is trekking through the jungle and be available for internet research, to receive samples, and be there in case anyone needs to be air lifted to a hospital in Lima (hey, it happens). I'll rejoin them for a couple of days in Lima after they get back from the jungle.

The last three weeks are pure vacation. I'm staying at the home of one of my colleagues in the San Miguel district of Lima. So far, plans including eating, going to the markets, eating, drinking pisco, going to karaoke, eating, drinking pisco, a possible trip to Cuzco/Machu Pichu, drinking pisco, eating...you get the idea. This trip is going to kill my diet, but it's probably a once-in-a-lifetime thing for me so I'm going to make the most of it. Yes, I'll take lots of pictures. I probably won't post them all here, but I will post some and put the rest somewhere accessible and share the link.

Oh, I guess I did get one more thing accomplished today. I attended my last ever stats lecture!

¡Hasta maƱana!
